Unlike the Sibyls (women reputed to possess powers of prophesy) painted by Michelangelo on the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling which were either athletes or crones, he decided to paint her as an adolescent. He aimed to touch his viewer’s emotions, a talent for which he continued to be admired into the eighteenth century.
